Barbara Tucker is something of a legend on the New York club scene. Co-founder of The Underground Network (the city’s longest running club), disco diva extraordinaire and high-profile keeper of the house flame, she’s spent more time under the strobes and glitterballs than Tom Jones has spent under the sunbed. Still not satisfied? Well, according to her press release her unique vocal styling on ‘Stop Playing with My Mind’ “keep the filtered disco loops alive throughout what is ultimately the finest 3 and a half minutes of funked-up house this century.” Blimey - what a woman!

BARBARA TUCKER FEAT DARLY D'BONNEAU - 'STOP PLAYING WITH MY MIND' (POSITIVA)
Released on: Mon 6 Mar 2000

Poor old Barbara Tucker. The inescapable forward march of time has forced the once Masters At Work-produced New York club impresario to abandon the rolling NY Garage rhythms of 'Beautiful People' and 'Stay Together', in favour of the high octane production of helium house.

Barbara Tucker

The commercial mix from Full Intention pounds away with all the subtlety of the last tiresome filtered disco-house bore that you heard and sounds like it was produced by unusually talented lab rats after a three year course of daily amphetamine tests. Let's hope that Barbara's next release reflects the great music that she made in the mid-nineties and doesn't pander to this silliness.

BARBARA TUCKER: STOP PLAYING WITH MY MIND - (Strictly Rhythm Records, US)

Ms. Tucker's records are always worth waiting for and this one is no exception to the rule. Co-penned by hitmaker Duane Harden this looks set to storm clubland and the nationals in the same way that Harden's "You Don''t Even Know Me" and "What You Need" did. The song is built around a pounding disco loop with enough 'oomph' to crossover to a more commercial market. Barbara puts in an excellent vocal performance (as ever) and is joined on vocals by the astounding Darryl D'Bonneau who takes control of the first verse, giving it a duet-type feel. This track is a classic in the making that will be setting dance floors alight for many months to come. (LH)
